At the beginning of the semester, we were asked to answer the question, Who am I? This was my original response:
For me, this is a very difficult question to answer. As human beings, defining who we are is a very complicated thing. I can sit here and list things about myself and my views, but does that really describe who I am as a person? They are merely parts of me and together they make up my personality as a whole. The most important factors in my life are my friends and family. Without them I would not be the person I am today. My friends are my world. As for my goals in life, I am planning on studying bio and spanish at The Ohio State University. I am a huge buckeye fan obviously. In the future, I want to do research in genetic engineering. Well thats all I can think to write about myself for now!
After the semester learning new sociological ideas, there are many ways I would amend my answer, yet I still believe that what I originally wrote does help to describe who I am. American culture plays a large role in who I am. Growing up in the area that I did made me who I am today. If I had grown up in a different country, my views of what is normal would be completely different. Also, the media has become a part of who I am. I believe that every kid growing up in America, and maybe even the world, is now greatly influenced by the media. The trends and customs are often set through media in the world today. I think one of the most influential factors of who I am at this point in time though is being a teenager. This contributes to my risk taking mentality. I would have no hesitations going bungee jumping or sky diving, while if I was older, I'm not so sure this would be my mentality. Also, my social class has helped to shape me as well. Growing up in the upper middle class has given me opportunities that other people do not get the chance to have. I will be attending college , and hopefully going on to live a stable lifestyle similar to my parents. Overall, the many aspects of sociology help contribute to who I am. This has been an eye opening semester for me. Goodbye for now!
