A Bronx Tale
The aspect of a Bronx Tale that most influenced me was that racism that was shown. Even though C tried to not have racist tendencies, the influences around him showed. I think that in a way, this is true of real life. Some people truly believe that everyone is equal, no matter the race, but if they grow up in a racist environment, sometimes little things get programmed in. Fortunately for me, I have grown up in a household that has taught me no racial tendancies. In society, however, many times racism is made more prevalent. In the media today especially you can see racism. In the movie, I guess I can relate to C's struggle with an interracial relationship. I have been in a few interracial relationships and often times people do not approve of them or do not understand. I am able to ignore any of these negative comments about my relationships, but in a neighborhood like the one C was in, I could see this being much more difficult to ignore. I hope that over time this segregation and racism will fade away, but it can still be seen in many places in the US today.

I am still shocked to hear about racist people. Really, it just has no logical explanation. Luckily, it has gotten a lot better over the years, but you are correct in saying that there are still many many racist people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about C and his the racism he grew up with, it is mostly shown when he uses vulgar language to insult Jane's brother...you could tell he really didn't mean it at all but thats what he grew up hearing.
ReplyDeleteI see your point that things are programmed into your subconscious and I feel that even if one tries to be completely objective towards race, it ends up being more difficult than it appears. I feel that subconsciously human beings are racist, and that we have little control over what we do involuntarily. I can also relate to the interracial relationships. My best friend is Indian. I'm sure we look like quite a pair walking down the hallway. One white. One Indian.
ReplyDeleteI agree that social views of racism can be prevalent despite a down to earth and equality based household. I am optimistic that we can move past such hypocrisy and see everyone as an equal person and dilute the distractions of being a different color. But at the same time, I think that stereotypes concerning race are inevitable and that there is a very small probability of us overcoming such a burdensome issue.
ReplyDeleteDue to our lack of a melting pot school of SHS, it's practically been stapled in our minds that any other race besides caucasion is "different" than us. I try to engage in interracial relationships as much as possible; after all, we all have something positive to bring to the table.
